Graham Mansion at Graham's Forge in Virginia was the home of a plantation and ironworks owner, and the enslaved people held on this land are the reason anyone comes here. That part is documented history rather than legend, and it is the part worth stating first.

The accounts collected locally go a great deal further. They describe an owner who tortured and killed the people he held, and who burned a slave house with more than a hundred men, women and children inside it. Neither claim appears in any record we have been able to check, and figures of that scale are not supported by the county's own documentation. They belong to the folklore that grew around the house rather than to its history, and repeating them as fact does the actual dead no favours.
