The central figure is a woman said to have hanged herself from the overpass on her wedding day, reported since in her wedding dress. In another version told locally, a Black woman in a white dress walks up onto the bridge and out onto the ledge, falls, then stops in mid air and swings. Local tradition also holds that Black men were lynched further along this road.
