The old house on the river at Hopewell sheltered soldiers of both sides. A nurse is said to have hidden a Union man inside the basement wall.

This house stands on the point where the Appomattox meets the James at Hopewell, Virginia, and during the Civil War it was used by soldiers of both armies, particularly during the campaign against Petersburg.

The legend concerns a nurse who hid a Union soldier inside the basement wall when Confederate troops came to the house.

The real history of this ground is remarkable in its own right. In 1864 Grant made City Point his headquarters and turned this quiet plantation landing into one of the busiest ports in the world, with wharves, railways, hospitals and warehouses supplying an army of a hundred thousand men. Lincoln stayed here. A Confederate agent blew up the ammunition barge at the wharf and killed dozens.

The family house stood through all of it and is still standing.

It is part of the national park and is open to visitors.
