In the 1970s the Tennessee building was used to hold remains recovered from an air crash at Parrottsville that killed some sixty people.

The Memorial Building at Newport, Tennessee served a purpose in the 1970s that few buildings ever have to. Remains recovered from an aircraft crash at Parrottsville, in which around sixty to seventy people died, were stored here.

The account that circulates locally comes from the year 2000, when a group of college students chose the building as the subject of a paper for a psychology class. They had to return three times, because on each visit something drove them out before they had finished.

Their method was borrowed from a television format of the period. Each of them would sit alone in a room for ten minutes. The first attempt ended when a woman's scream came from the attic and the group left the building.

What gives this one its weight is not the students but what the building was used for. Sixty or seventy people died in a field in east Tennessee, and this is where what was left of them was kept until it could be identified and returned.
