Before this became a university at Harrogate, Tennessee, the site was the Four Seasons Hotel, a grand resort in the Cumberland Gap.

It was built by English investors in the 1880s as part of an enormous scheme to industrialise the Cumberland Gap, complete with a railway tunnel and a resort for the shareholders. The scheme collapsed and the buildings were handed over, which is how the university came to exist.
