The account that matters comes from a beginner. He was alone in the theatre one night and saw a man sitting in a chair, smoking a pipe.

He told a more experienced actor about it afterwards. That friend took him to a photograph and asked him whether the man he had seen was in it.

He picked out Ralph.

That is one of the very few accounts in this archive with a control built into it. The witness was new to the company, had never met Ralph, and was shown a picture by somebody testing him rather than telling him. Whatever it proves, the sequence was the right way round.

The playhouse is a working community theatre.
