Hot Lake at La Grande, Oregon opened in 1907 as a resort built around the hot springs, and its reputation was serious enough that it was called the Mayo Clinic of the West. It burned in 1934, and everything except the brick section was lost.

What survived went through a sequence of uses that reads like a checklist for a haunted building. It was a hotel. Then it was an asylum. Then, in the 1970s, it became a nursing home.

The report that visitors mention first is a piano playing, which would be unremarkable except that there is no piano in the building. Clattering footsteps moving along the corridors are the second. Chairs coming off the walls have been described more than once.

The grounds have their own account. A gardener is said to have hanged himself behind the hotel, and local tradition holds that he never left the property. The building has since been restored and put back into use, which means the current reports come from staff and paying guests rather than from people who broke in.
