A family came out to old Kingman in the 1800s looking for gold and built a large house beside a deep, narrow canyon.

Two or three miles south east of downtown Kingman, Arizona is a place known locally as Launa's Canyon.

The story begins in the 1800s with a family of four arriving in old Kingman to look for gold: a husband, his wife Launa, and his two daughters from an earlier marriage.

In time they built a large house near a deep and narrow canyon.

What happened in that house, and how Launa's name ended up on the canyon rather than the family's, is the whole of the story and the reason people still drive out there.

A stepmother alone in mining country with two daughters who were not hers is a set of circumstances that produced a great deal of real hardship across the American west, and a good many legends afterwards. No record has been produced for this one.

The canyon is rough, remote desert ground.
