A hidden trail leads down to a hollow with woods on one side and a large lake on the other. It looks like a good place to swim.

Near the Highway 89 turning towards Ogden, in Layton, Utah, there is a secluded neighbourhood, and from it a hidden trail leads down into a large hollow. Woods on one side, a substantial lake on the other.

It looks like an ideal place for a summer swim, and that is the problem.

In the late 1970s the undertow in that water took people.

What is reported there now comes from the lake.

This is one of the few entries in this collection where the practical warning is the entire point. Still water in a hollow can carry currents that are invisible from the bank, particularly where it is fed or drained by pipes or channels, and the temperature difference between the surface and a few feet down is enough on its own to cause trouble.

The hollow is reached through private land.
