The site above Brigham City, Utah is usually called the old Indian schools, and it is a compound rather than a single building. It was established as a boarding institution for Native American children from northern Utah and beyond, run on the dormitory and high school model that governed such places across the country. During the Second World War the site also served as a hospital for wounded soldiers, and a network of tunnels was laid beneath it as a precaution.

Something of that history is still readable on the hillside. The letter B for Box Elder remains on the mountain, and the faded I beside it belongs to the school.

Several buildings are boarded up. Others stand open, and it is those that attract visitors. The reports are the ordinary ones for an abandoned institution: doors that move, banging that carries between buildings, objects thrown out of empty rooms, and voices picked up on recordings. The heavier part of what is felt here has little to do with the paranormal, and everything to do with what the place was built to do.
