Opened in 1920 as a tuberculosis hospital for Black patients, later an institution for children with disabilities, closed in 1985 and left standing for.

Henryton stood on Henryton Road near Patapsco Valley State Park in Maryland. It opened in 1920 and was built for a specific reason that the accounts usually leave out: it was the state's tuberculosis hospital for Black patients, in a segregated system that would not treat them elsewhere.

Later it became an institution for children with intellectual disabilities.

It closed in 1985 and stood abandoned for nearly thirty years, drawing an enormous amount of trespassing, vandalism and arson. Fire crews were called there repeatedly, at real risk to themselves, until the state demolished the buildings in 2013.

Everything reported inside was reported by people who broke in.

The site is now empty ground within the park boundary. The history of who was treated here, and why they were sent here rather than anywhere else, is the part worth carrying away.
