Glen Dale Hospital

Six buildings on both sides of a Maryland road, abandoned since the late 1970s, with medical equipment still scattered through them.

Glen Dale Hospital in Maryland had its heyday in the early 1900s and was abandoned in the late 1970s. It consists of six buildings standing on opposite sides of the road.

The reports concentrate on the two structures closest to the road on the right hand side.

Most of the doors and windows are broken out and abandoned medical equipment is scattered through the interiors, which is unusual: institutions are normally stripped when they close, and Glen Dale largely was not.

What visitors describe includes patients moving about the second floor, smoke seen inside the buildings, and, more strangely, a large pack of dogs.

The dogs are the detail that separates this from every other abandoned hospital account. Nobody offers an explanation for them.

The site is county property, posted and patrolled, and it has been the subject of repeated efforts to keep people out. Everything reported here was reported by trespassers, in buildings full of broken glass and eighty year old medical waste.
