Little Crow spent a night in this Hutchinson house with two friends. He was shot dead near this town in 1863, and what was done with his body afterwards.

North of Park Elementary in Hutchinson, Minnesota stands a small single storey house, said locally to be the first built in the town, put up by the Harrington family and lived in by them for forty years.

The date usually given is around 1820, which cannot be right, since Hutchinson was founded in 1855.

What matters here is the night Little Crow is said to have spent in the house with two companions.

Little Crow was Mdewakanton Dakota, not Crow, and he led the Dakota in the war of 1862. On the sixth of July 1863 he was shot while picking raspberries with his son a few miles from this town. His body was brought into Hutchinson, dragged through the main street, mutilated, and thrown into the offal pit. His scalp and skull were kept and displayed for nearly a century before Minnesota returned his remains to his family in 1971.
