A farmhouse burned near the tracks outside Adrian, Michigan. The father ran for the horses. His wife and small son went to the rails to flag down a train.

Take Gorman Road west toward Sand Creek in Michigan and you come to a gravel road running north. A mile or so up it there is a narrow one lane trestle bridge, with the road passing beneath it.

The account holds that a farmhouse once stood near the tracks here. Late one night a fire broke out in the barn. The father ran for the barn to get the horses out. His wife and their young son went to the railway line, where trains passed frequently, to flag one down and get help.

They stood too close to the track.

What is reported at the trestle since follows from that, and the site takes its name from it.

Railway legends of this kind are common across the Midwest, and this one has not been checked against any record. What is real is the trestle, the gravel road beneath it, and the fact that this line once carried enough traffic that flagging down a train in an emergency was a reasonable thing for a farm family to try.
