This house at Council Bluffs, Iowa belonged to General Grenville Dodge and his family, and the town runs tours through it for its age and its architecture.

The account written by a local is blunt about that. The real story, it says, is that the General is still there, wandering about or sitting in his rocking chair.

Dodge is worth knowing about. He was a Union general, and afterwards chief engineer of the Union Pacific, the man who chose where the first transcontinental railroad would run. He met Lincoln in this town in 1859 and told him Council Bluffs was where the line should start, and it was.

Two men arguing, in the house of a man who spent his life in that kind of argument, is a fitting thing to be left with.

The house is a museum and is open.
