Built eight storeys tall in downtown Dubuque in the mid nineteenth century, about fifty years before Chicago put up what is usually called the first.

The Fischer Building in Dubuque, Iowa was originally eight storeys, raised in the middle of the nineteenth century, roughly fifty years before the building generally credited as the first skyscraper went up in Chicago. A steel addition later took it to nine, with a smaller structure on top of that.

Two separate accounts are attached to it.

The first is in the basement, in the offices used by the maintenance staff, which is where the people who know the building best spend their working day.

The second belongs to the upper part of the building.

A nine storey building in a Mississippi river town of this age is a rare survivor. Most of what people report comes from staff working the mechanical spaces, which in a building of this vintage means boiler rooms, lift machinery and service shafts that have been in continuous use for well over a century.
