The mansion burned and its columns are still standing in the field. There are two burial grounds here: the family's, and the one for the people they owned.

The Forks of Cypress near Florence, Alabama was one of the great houses of the state, and it burned. What is left is the ring of columns, still standing in the open, which is one of the most striking sights in north Alabama.

The bridge nearby carries its own reputation and is what most visitors come for.

The accounts here come from two cemeteries: the family's, and the burial ground for the people they enslaved.

That second graveyard is the reason this entry matters. Forks of Cypress was built on the labour of enslaved men and women, the house and the columns were raised by them, and their graves are on the same land. The family plot has names and dates. The other, as at almost every plantation in the south, largely does not.

The site is private property and the ruins are on farmland.
