Drish Mansion

Sarah Drish burned candles while her husband lay in state, then locked them away and asked that they be lit again at her own funeral.

The Drish Mansion in Tuscaloosa, Alabama was built as a plantation house by Dr John Drish for his wife Sarah, and the city has since grown around it.

When Dr Drish died, Sarah burned candles beside him while he lay in state. After the funeral she put them away and left instructions that they were to be burned again at hers.

As her own health failed she became increasingly preoccupied with those candles.

When she died, her wishes on the point were not carried out.

What has been reported at the house ever since is fire: the tower appearing lit from within, seen by people passing, with no fire found. It is one of the best known accounts in Alabama and it has been reported by neighbours and by the fire service rather than only by visitors.

The building has been restored and is used as an event venue.
