These buildings on the Milwaukee County Grounds at Wauwatosa were tuberculosis sanatoria, and some now house laboratories for a small bioengineering firm.

The largest of them stands abandoned.

People walking through the park at dusk or later describe the sense of being watched, and the physical reaction that goes with it.

The county grounds are worth knowing about. This land held the county asylum, the poor farm, the sanatorium and the county cemetery, all together, and thousands of people are buried there in unmarked graves. Remains have been turned up by construction work more than once.

So the park people walk through at dusk is a burial ground whether or not it looks like one.

The buildings were designed by Alexander Eschweiler, one of Milwaukee's significant architects.

The park is public and the buildings are not.
