The campus was sold to the university by the nuns who lived there. One of them did not want to leave and died near where the chapel now stands.

When this university moved out from downtown Milwaukee to its present campus at Mequon, it bought the site from the order of nuns who had lived there.

One of the sisters did not want to go. She died near what is now the chapel.

The students call her Sister Sixtoes, and she is reported in the chapel and in several of the residence halls.

The nickname is worth pausing on. It is affectionate and slightly absurd, which is how student bodies handle a figure they are not actually frightened of, and it has survived through cohorts who have no idea where it came from.

What sits underneath the story is real enough. A religious community that had spent its working life on a piece of ground handed it over to somebody else, and the women in it were moved somewhere they had not chosen.
