The story attached to this burial ground between Eagleville and Rockvale, Tennessee is that three women were condemned as witches in the 1800s and buried here.

That cannot be right in the legal sense. Witchcraft had not been a capital charge anywhere in the United States for well over a century by then, and no such case exists in Tennessee records. What did happen, in this state and many others, is that women were accused, driven out, and sometimes killed by their neighbours without any court involved at all.

What visitors report is lights, voices, being touched or grabbed at with nothing behind them, and a scratching on the face and arms that people consistently describe as feeling like broom straw.

Tennessee has the Bell Witch, the most famous American haunting outside Salem, about forty miles north of here.

The cemetery is small, rural and on private land in places.
