The method is better than it sounds. Leaving the recorder in an empty building and standing outside removes the commonest source of error in recordings of this kind, which is the investigators themselves breathing, shifting and muttering within range of the microphone.

It does not remove the building settling, or the tape itself, or the fact that people hear what they are listening for.
