The wooden bridge over Scarecorn Creek collapsed under a couple crossing it some sixty years ago. The rebuilt bridge has an instruction attached to it.

The bridge lies off Carver Mill Road in western Pickens County, Georgia, crossing Scarecorn Creek. Fifty or sixty years ago it was a wooden structure. A couple drove across it, it gave way beneath them, and both were killed in the creek below.

The bridge today is paved and properly supported.

The ritual attached to it is exacting, and that is what has kept it in circulation. Drive onto the bridge at night, switch off the engine, and then extinguish every artificial light you have with you. Not only the headlights and any torches, but mobile phone screens, pager lights, anything at all that emits.

Only then, according to the instructions, does anything happen.

The demand for total darkness is what makes this one interesting as folklore. It builds in an explanation for every failed attempt, since somebody will always have left something glowing. It also puts a car full of people in the dark on a bridge over a creek, which is where the story wanted them in the first place.
