Chickamauga in north Georgia was the second bloodiest battle of the American Civil War. Around thirty four thousand men were killed or wounded over two days in September 1863.

The figure reported here is known as Old Green Eyes, and what separates him from almost every other battlefield apparition is when the reports start. Soldiers described him during the war itself, moving among the dead between engagements. He was not invented afterwards by visitors.

What people see is a pair of glowing green eyes in the treeline.

There is also an observation tower on the field, visible from the main road. The top four steps carry a stain that visitors take for blood, and attempts to remove it are said to have failed.

The battlefield is a national military park and is open to the public. It closes at dusk.
