The crew were warned not to go on. The engineer was reported as saying they would either make it across or go down together.

The creek had already undermined the trestle. The train went into the water, and the wreck killed almost everyone aboard.

It remains one of the worst rail disasters in the history of the state, and bodies were carried downstream and recovered over the following days by people from the surrounding farms.

What is reported now belongs both to the crossing itself and to the houses around it, which is unusual and follows from how the dead were brought in. Homes near the creek were used to lay out the recovered.
