Drive into the woods along the dirt road and, according to every telling, his lantern is visible in the distance.

There is a second part to the instructions, and it is the cruel one. Call out to the light that you have found his children, and it responds.

Snow in the South Carolina low country is rare enough that a storm bad enough to lose three people in would have been remembered for generations, which may be exactly why this story survived when so many others did not.

The road is unpaved and runs through private woodland.
