An old burial ground lies in the woods thirty feet behind the north west corner of this Hartsville apartment complex. The graves have sunk and the ground.

Residents of the apartments at Lincoln Village in Hartsville, South Carolina report sounds late at night when they come home alone: babies crying, and voices asking for help.

The explanation offered was that the buildings stand on a cemetery.

An update from December 2006 establishes what is actually there, and it is close enough. There is an old graveyard next to the complex rather than beneath it. Go to the north west corner and there is a wooded area. About thirty feet back into the trees are the graves.

They are overgrown. They have sunk, and the ground over them is soft.

That is a real and fairly common situation across the American south: a small burial ground, often a Black cemetery or a family plot, left out of the record when the land around it was developed, and gradually swallowed by scrub while people live thirty feet away without knowing.

The graves deserve better than they have had. They are not an attraction and they are on the edge of people's homes.
