The Anson Lights are seen on a dirt farm road running out towards the cemetery in Anson, Texas, and they are among the best known light phenomena in the state.

The method is fixed. You drive out a set distance down the road, and then follow the instructions, which involve turning the car around.

Residents of Anson and of nearby Abilene have been going out there for decades, and the story was covered by a national television series.

The conventional explanation, that the lights are the headlights of vehicles on a distant highway, refracted and displaced by the turning manoeuvre and the terrain, has been demonstrated more than once and is probably correct.

That has never emptied the road. The lights are reliable, which is exactly what a good explanation would predict and exactly why people keep coming.

The road is public, rural and used by farm traffic.
