A child buried beside a trail, a long way from anywhere her family intended to be, is the most common death in the whole history of American westward migration. Disease killed far more emigrants than anything else, cholera above all, and the trails west are lined with graves that were dug in a hurry and left behind the same day.

That her name survived at all is unusual. Most did not.
