Savannah's oldest inn keeps the story of Anna, a seventeen year old who watched her sailor's ship leave and never came down from the third floor.

The 1790 Inn and Tavern in Savannah, Georgia takes its name from the year it was built, and its ghost from a girl called Anna. She was seventeen, in love with a sailor, and pregnant, which in her time and her city meant being shunned.

The story was told for years with the sailor jumping from the third floor window. A correction circulated in December 2003 and is now the accepted version: he had gone to sea and was not there at all. Anna was the one who went out of the window. From that room she could watch the sails of his ship move down the river and out toward open water, most likely for good.

Guests describe the haunting mainly as things going astray. Wallets, identification, items of clothing, later turning up in planters or behind bookshelves. People staying in her room report hearing her move about in it. The inn also carries two other traditions: a woman who keeps to the kitchen and is said to have practised voodoo, and a presence in the bar and restaurant.
