Mary's Grave

New York · USA · Road

A headstone at Stony Brook on Long Island carries a birth date and no date of death. The stories about who she was do not agree on anything else.

Mary's Grave on Long Island is one of the most visited legend sites in New York, and the physical detail that keeps it going is on the stone itself: it carries her date of birth and no date of death.

The older version holds that she murdered her two children and her husband.

A variation recorded in December 2003 is the one most often heard in the area now, and it is a different story entirely. In it, Mary was the daughter of a wealthy landowner who owned the area and effectively founded the town. He was a solitary man and built his house well away from everyone else. He also had a son. Mary had no friends, so her father built her a stone playhouse on the property. She liked animals and played with them there.

The two versions cannot both be true, and neither has ever been documented. What is real is the marker, the missing death date, and the stone structure in the woods that the second version says her father built for her.
