Maude's Grave, Hell Hollow
Connecticut · USA · Road
A pile of rocks ten feet from Hell Hollow Road in the Connecticut state forest. Drivers describe a black shape crossing ahead of them and then following.
Maude's Grave lies in Pachaug State Forest in Connecticut, and a correction from September 2005 sorted out years of confusion about it. The site had been listed three separate times. It is approached far more easily from the Sterling end of Hell Hollow Road, and it is on that side rather than at Voluntown.
The grave itself is unmistakable once found: a pile of rocks about ten feet from the road, on the right hand side coming from Sterling, reached by a cleared path. It can be visited without difficulty and without disturbing anyone.
The reports on the road are stranger than the grave. Drivers describe a black shape, tall, moving about two feet above the ground, crossing in front of their headlights and then following the car. Estimates of its height run to seventeen feet, which is the kind of figure that says more about how frightened people were than about what was there.
State forest roads are dark and empty at night, and Hell Hollow has been collecting accounts for a very long time.
