The New Mexico Military Institute at Roswell does not assign the phonetic letter J, for Juliet, to any of its troops.

The reason cadets give is that Juliet troop is cursed, and the story sends it back to the 1800s, when the school is said to have been defended by its own troops on the frontier.

The date does not work. The institute was founded in 1891, and the frontier fighting in this part of New Mexico was largely over by then.

What is true is the tradition itself. An institution that has quietly declined to use a letter for over a century, and where every cadet knows why, has preserved something whether or not the story behind it happened.

Military schools run on ritual and repetition, which makes them extraordinarily good at carrying a piece of folklore intact across generations who never meet.

The institute is an operating school and closed to visitors.
