Mudhouse Mansion
Ohio · USA · Manor
The story told about the outbuildings here is one of the ugliest in this archive, and there is no truth in any of it.
Mudhouse Mansion stood outside Lancaster, Ohio, empty for decades, with outbuildings behind it.
The legend attached to those outbuildings holds that enslaved people were kept in them, dug their way out from underneath with their fingernails, and killed the family who owned the house.
None of it happened. Ohio was a free state from its founding in 1803, no such killing took place, and the family who built the house have descendants who spent years asking people to stop repeating it. The story appears to have grown in the twentieth century around an empty building that looked the part.
It is recorded here for one reason: it is one of the most repeated ghost stories in Ohio, and repeating it without saying that plainly does harm.
The owners were driven to distraction by trespassers for years, and the house was demolished in 2015. There is nothing on the site.
