The person who wrote this account was a member of staff and says they witnessed it themselves more than once, including one night on the third shift, standing at the sinks in a dormitory and looking into the mirror.

The history is not folklore. Texas state schools for boys, and Gatesville in particular, were the subject of federal litigation in the 1970s after sustained physical abuse of the children held in them was documented. Boys were sent there for truancy and for running away as often as for anything else. The case that came out of Gatesville changed juvenile detention law across the country.

The institution is an active prison and is closed to visitors.
