Built around 1850 as a water cure retreat for the mountain springs, later the Ephrata Hospital, closed when the new hospital opened in 1949.

The Mountain Springs Hotel at Ephrata, Pennsylvania was built around 1850 as a hydropathic retreat, on the strength of what were believed to be the medicinal properties of the mountain springs. Water cures were a serious industry in the nineteenth century and people travelled from across the country for them.

It was a famous resort in its day.

Later the building became the Ephrata Hospital, and it served as one until 1949, when a new hospital was built and this one closed.

What happened to the building after the hospital moved out is where the accounts begin.

A resort that became a hospital is an unusual sequence: the same rooms that people came to in order to get well were later where a good many of them died, and the building did both jobs across a hundred years.
