During a storm in the 1800s the trestle over the creek was washed out. With no way to stop the train, the signalman stood on the bank where the bridge had.

Moonville Tunnel sits near the Zaleski forest in Ohio, on a long abandoned line. The tunnel is still standing and local children swim in the creek beside it.

During a thunderstorm in the 1800s the trestle carrying the line over the creek was washed away. There was no way to signal the oncoming train and no way to stop it.

The signalman went and stood on the near bank, where the bridge had been, and waved his lantern. Beyond him was about twenty feet of ground and then the mouth of the tunnel, so a driver would have had almost no warning at all.

What is reported at Moonville is a light moving along the old grade, and it is understood as his lantern.

The tunnel is on public land, reached on foot, and the old railway bed is now a trail. It is one of the best known haunted sites in Ohio and one of the few with a plausible reason behind it.
