John Orr and his young wife Mabel came to Clarendon with an opera company in 1893 and stayed. He beat her, and she looked for a way out.
Early in 1893 an opera and comedy company led by John Orr and his young wife Ernze Mabel Orr came to Clarendon, Arkansas to perform at the local opera house. They liked the town and stayed.
The Orrs lived in a house with several Black servants quartered at the back. John Orr abused his wife.
One of the hands helped Mabel prepare a hoodoo intended to kill him. It did not work, and the abuse continued.
What Mabel did next brought the case to the courthouse, and what followed is bound up with who was standing beside her when she did it. In Arkansas in 1893, a Black servant implicated alongside a white woman was in a categorically different position before the court, and the outcomes reflected that.
The courthouse at Clarendon is where the case was heard, and it is the building the accounts are attached to.
