Native children at the mission who fell ill with tuberculosis were shut in the cool damp cellar, because somebody believed it would help. It did not.

The Mission House on Mackinac Island was built at the centre of a Christian mission set up to convert the Native people living on the island.

When the Native children at the mission caught tuberculosis, they were locked in the cool damp cellar, because it was thought this would do them good.

It did not.

That sentence is the entry and it does not need any help. The children were taken into an institution that had already separated them from their own people and their own beliefs, and then they were shut in a cellar to die of a disease the mission had brought to the island along with everything else.

Mackinac was Anishinaabe ground long before it was anything else, and it remains significant to the Odawa and Ojibwe.

The building is now state employee housing and is not open to visitors.
