Miller's Church

Maryland · USA · Execution site

The church burned years after it was said to have been used for other purposes. A couple parked there afterwards, and the car would not start.

This church near Hagerstown, Maryland was believed in the 1930s to be used for rites it was not built for. Years later it burned down.

One night a young couple went out there to park. When they were ready to leave the car would not start, and he told her to stay inside and keep the doors locked while he walked for help.

Anyone who has heard an American ghost story knows what comes next, and that is the point.

This is the boyfriend's death, one of the two or three most travelled urban legends in the English speaking world, and it appears in this archive under half a dozen different place names. Folklorists have collected it since the 1960s.

What is genuine is the site. A burned rural church with a graveyard is a real place that real teenagers really did drive out to, and it collected the story because it fitted.

The ruins are on private land.
