The woods at Milan Manor

Illinois · USA · Manor

A farmer who struck and killed a boy with a plough in 1986 reported a second child at the scene. Nobody has ever identified him.

In 1986 a young boy was run over and killed by a tractor plough in the fields near Milan, Illinois. It was an accident, and it is the starting point for everything reported since.

The farmer driving the plough said there had been a second boy there. He could not say much about him beyond a description: a red t shirt, blue jeans, dark brown hair, and perhaps eight years old.

When neighbours at Milan Manor Apartments, where the boy who died had lived, were asked about it, they said he had last been seen with another child they did not know, and their description matched the farmer's.

No further sighting of the boy in the red t shirt was reported until 1989. Since then there have been a number of accounts describing two boys in the woods rather than one.

The second child has never been identified, and no family has ever come forward. That is the part of this account that has kept it in circulation locally for decades, and it is a genuinely open question rather than a ghost story.
