Mears Junction

Colorado · USA · Haunted site

A water tank stood above this junction on the old narrow gauge line, where trains filled their boilers to get over Poncha Pass. In autumn 1894 a girl.

About two miles south of Mears Junction in Colorado, along the abandoned Denver and Rio Grande line, there used to be a water tank. Trains stopped there to fill their boilers so they could make the climb over Poncha Pass.

In the autumn of 1894 a train stopped as usual. A small girl named Annabell got off with her brother to walk in the woods for a while.

What happened when the train was ready to leave is the whole of the story, and it is the reason a water stop on an abandoned railway is still remembered by name.

The line has been gone for a long time and the tank with it. What is left is high, remote country in the Sawatch, a grade that was hard enough to require a stop, and a date.

Railway stories of this kind rarely come with a child's name attached, and this one has kept hers.
