The house on Fifth Street in Marietta, Ohio, now a college sorority house, was built in 1855 by William P Skinner, an early merchant, the second sheriff of the county and a bank director.

His daughter Sarah married Nahum Ward, of one of the founding families of the town.

In 1908 the house was bought by George White, an oilman and banker who was later elected governor of Ohio and led the state through the worst years of the Depression.

So the building held two generations of the local establishment before it held students, and what is reported in it is attributed to the earlier occupants rather than the later.

Marietta is the oldest permanent American settlement in the Northwest Territory, founded in 1788, and the houses on these streets are among the first built west of the Appalachians by the new republic.

The house is a private residence for students and is not open.
