Mammoth Cave in Kentucky is the longest cave system in the world, and it has more than one presence attached to it.

The older account concerns a southern woman named Melissa who in 1843 brought her Yankee lover into the cave, took him as far as Purgatory Point, and left him there as a prank. He never came out. She is said to still be searching the stretch known as Echo River.

The second is documented history rather than folklore. Floyd Collins was trapped in nearby Crystal Cave and died there after sixteen days. The rescue attempt became a national news story on a scale that had never happened before, with reporters and crowds gathering above him while he was still alive underground.
