Maltby Cemetery
Washington · USA · Cemetery
Thirteen steps once descended below ground at this small Washington cemetery, said to be the entrance to a wealthy family's tomb. Around thirty five.
Maltby Cemetery is hidden off the right hand side of the Redmond Duvall Road, about twenty miles east of Seattle, and holds around thirty five graves.
Visitors describe women and children in old and ragged clothing moving among the plots. Unusually for a cemetery report, several witnesses describe being physically struck.
The feature that made the site notorious is no longer there. A staircase began at ground level and descended thirteen steps below ground. The account attached to it, recorded in additional information from February 2005, was that it formed a below grade entrance to the elaborate tomb of a locally wealthy family. The thirteen steps became the centre of everything told about the place, and generations of teenagers came out here at night to count them.
The cemetery is small, genuinely hard to find, and has suffered from the attention over the years. It is worth saying plainly that it is a burial ground rather than an attraction, and that the damage done to it has been done by the living.
