The farmhouse on Main Street

New Jersey · USA · Hotel

A farmer living here in the 1800s often saw a girl staring in at him through a window, and sometimes crying. His dog would not go into the room she used.

This mid nineteenth century farmhouse in Chester, New Jersey has been refurbished and is now offices.

The accounts go back to the farmer who lived here in the 1800s, which is unusual: most of the entries in this archive begin with a modern witness. He often saw a young girl in a white dress staring at him through a window, and sometimes she was crying.

His dog refused to go into the room where she appeared most often.

A nineteenth century farmer reporting something in his own house, and being taken seriously enough for it to be written down and to survive to the present, is a stronger provenance than almost anything else here.

The animal detail also comes from him rather than from a modern investigator, which removes one of the usual objections to it.

The building is a working office.
