The abandoned hospital in the Presidio at San Francisco stood empty for years, fenced off, with the windows boarded, and a basement door at the back that was never properly secured.

Soldiers died there, and people who got inside reported them.

The Presidio was a military post from 1776, under Spain, then Mexico, then the United States, and it was in continuous use until 1994. Letterman Army Hospital treated casualties evacuated from the Pacific in the Second World War, then Korea, then Vietnam. Wounded men came off ships and aircraft and into that building by the thousand.

The hospital was demolished and a large studio and office campus built on the site, which is why this entry has been filed under that name.

The Presidio is now a national park and is open. The hospital is gone.
