Not long after Darling Church was built near Randall, Minnesota, a woman was kidnapped and murdered inside it. The account handed down blames two African American men.

The original submitter was blunt about what that means, and so should we be. In that period, in a state with a tiny Black population, an accusation of this kind attached itself to Black men as a matter of course, whether or not there was any evidence and frequently when there was none. The accusation is the part of this story most likely to be false, and repeating it as established fact would be repeating a lie that got people killed across the United States.

What is described from the night itself comes from a farmer working nearby. It was raining. He was out in the yard getting something in out of the wet when he heard a woman scream. It sounded to him as if it came from the church, but the weather was bad and he did not go to look.

He worked out what he had heard afterwards, which is the part he had to live with.
