On his deathbed he had to be tied down, because he kept shouting that something was coming for him.

The man this house and this town in Missouri are named for was a Civil War era figure, and what local memory says about him is ugly.

He is remembered as having beaten, shot and hanged Black men who came in on the railway that was being built, along with anybody else he took against.

None of that is documented here, and it is set down as what the district has passed on rather than as established fact. What is documented is the pattern. Missouri during and after the war was one of the most violent places in the country, guerrilla bands operated on both sides, and Black labourers on railway work were among the least protected people in it.
