Ledge Light sits in open water at the mouth of the Thames River off Groton, Connecticut, with no land anywhere near it. Keepers lived out there with their families.

The story holds that John Randolph, known as Ernie, was stationed there with his wife. She told him repeatedly that she was unhappy and that the isolation was unbearable. He did not move and did not look for another posting.

Eventually she left with a captain of the Block Island ferry.

What Ernie did afterwards is what the lighthouse is remembered for, and the Coast Guard crews who later staffed the light are the ones who reported him: doors, the foghorn, and boats untied from the landing.

Ernie is one of the best known lighthouse ghosts in New England. The light is automated now and stands in the middle of a busy shipping channel.
